In late 2003 after couple of impressive performances in his first few Bundesliga games, Polish media suggested then-Polish national team coach Paweł Janas to check Podolski out, as he was still eligible to play for Poland. Janas ignored the request stating in one of the press interviews that "as for today we have much better strikers in Poland and I don't see a reason to call up a player just because he played one or two good matches in the Bundesliga. He's not even a regular starter at his club."

He will also be remembered as the coach who refused to consider Polish-born Bundesliga footballer Lukas Podolski for the Poland national team in 2003 when the young striker was noticed by the Polish press. Podolski, who had been interested in playing for his country of birth at the time, later made the German senior squad, was voted Best Young Player of the 2006 World Cup, and scored both goals in Germany's 2-0 defeat of Poland in Euro 2008.
彼はポーランド生まれのドイツリーグ所属のサッカー選手、ルーカス・ポドルスキーを代表チームに入れるようポーランド・メディアに要請されたときに、拒否した監督としても記憶される。当時のポドルスキーは母国の代表としてもプレーを考えていたが、結局ドイツ代表に決め、２００６年のドイツワールドカップでは最優秀若手選手に選ばれ、ユーロ２００８においてはポーランド相手に２ゴールを決めた。
